Pathology News Roundup: August 15, 2024

Register for CAP24.  It's hard to believe that the fall season is almost here... and that means CAP24 is just around the corner. Registration is now open for the College of American Pathologists' annual conference.

CAP24 is scheduled for October 19--22 at the Wynn Las Vegas. More than 1200 pathologists are expected to attend. CAP24 draws pathologists from both private practice and academia, encompassing various subspecialties, serving as the hub where pathologists discover the latest advancements in patient care. It also is an excellent source for continuing education, offering 84 in-person CME courses and various daily networking activities.

Voicebrook is excited to exhibit at CAP24... be sure to come say hello at our booth in the exhibit hall on October 20--21.

Register before September 20 to take advantage of the CAP's early bird pricing.

What We're Reading: "ChatGPT for digital pathology research."  An article in the August issue of online journal The Lancet Digital Health looks at the effects of large language models (LLM) and generative artificial intelligence (AI) on digital pathology.

In "ChatGPT for digital pathology research," authors Mohamed Omar, Varun Ullanat, Massimo Loda, Luigi Marchionni, and Renato Umeton discuss the potential of LLMs like OpenAI's ChatGPT-4 in the field of medical research, particularly digital pathology, highlighting the need for domain-specific AI tools, given the limited precision of generalist LLMs in this area. Omar and colleagues also present the Digital Pathology Assistant, a toolkit for computational pathology aiming to simplify the processing and analysis of pathology imaging data using the PathML library, capable of handling large-scale pathology imaging datasets.

ASCP and CAP--ACP Collaboration. The American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) and the Canadian Association of Pathologists (CAP--ACP) have a new agreement to enhance the quality of patient care, advance medical education, and take diagnostic medicine to a higher level.

A cornerstone of the agreement between ASCP and CAP--ACP allows each organization's members to register for and attend the other party's annual scientific meeting at the member registration rate, as well as any educational opportunity whether in person or virtual, provided they are members in good standing at the time of registration.

"We are thrilled to establish this partnership which will foster an exchange of knowledge in the field of pathology," said ASCP President Dr. Robert A. Goulart. "Both of our organizations are highly regarded leaders in providing pathology education and we recognize the value of providing our members with the opportunity to take advantage of each other's professional development offerings. Facilitating these avenues of continued learning translates into enhanced quality of care for our patients."
